Babywearing Myths - Debunked

If you’ve ever Googled “is babywearing safe?” at 3AM, you’ll know the internet is full of babywearing myths. And while some of these tales make for dramatic mum-group threads, most of them are just not true.

So let’s go through the biggest myths we hear all the time, unpack them gently, and lean on what the research actually says. Because parents deserve solid info - not fear-mongering.

Myth 1: “Babywearing Causes Hip Problems”

Short answer? Nope.

Long answer? Baby’s hips actually love being in the natural “M-Position” - knees higher than bottom, legs gently spread and supported.

According to the International Hip Dysplasia Institute and multiple paediatric studies, this position supports healthy hip development, especially in those early weeks when your little one’s joints are still forming. Good carriers are designed to hold baby exactly like this.

✨ All Chekoh Carriers, from the stretchy Wrap to the Clip Carrier 2.0, are designed around that safe “M-Position”, and are endorsed by the Australian Babywearing Association.

Debunked because:
Babywearing doesn’t cause hip issues - improper positioning does. When baby sit ergonomically, their hips are exactly where they need to be.

Myth 2: “Babywearing Will Make Your Baby ‘Too Clingy’”

Oh, this one again!

Here’s the thing: Research on infant development (think attachment theory, bonding hormones, all the good stuff) consistently shows that babies who receive close contact feel more secure, not more dependent.

Studies from developmental psychologists like Dr. Mary Ainsworth have shown that responsiveness and closeness actually help babies grow into more confident toddlers. So wearing your baby? It’s not spoiling - it’s supporting.

Debunked because:
Closeness builds security. Security builds independence.

Myth 3: “Babywearing Is Only for Newborns”

If you’ve ever seen a toddler sprint off toward a dog park at full speed, you’ll know that carriers absolutely have a place well beyond the newborn days.

Our Clip Carrier 2.0 has been safety tested up to 20kg, giving you months, even years, of comfortable, supported carrying. Many cultures have been carrying children well into toddlerhood for centuries.

Plus, older babies love the view from up high. It’s like their own VIP balcony seat to view the world from your level.

Debunked because:
Babywearing evolves as your baby does: hip carries & back carries. Supporting different stages, not just the squishy newborn phase.

Myth 4: “Babywearing Isn’t Safe in Hot Weather”

While we definitely don’t recommend wrapping your baby in three layers of wool on a hot Summer’s day, babywearing can be completely safe in warm weather.

Research shows babies regulate their temperature well when they’re close to a parent - your body naturally helps keep them cool or warm as needed. Choosing breathable fabrics like bamboo blends or linen helps even more.

Remember that any carrier acts as an extra layer, so we recommend dressing baby accordingly (a light singlet is a great option).

✨ Our Wrap, Sling and Clip Carrier ranges are intentionally designed with breathable fabrics, so you can keep wearing even when the humidity is being a little… dramatic.

Debunked because:
Overheating isn’t about babywearing - it’s about fabric choice, layers, and environment. Keep it lightweight and you’re good!

Myth 5: “Babywearing Is Complicated”

Okay, valid - wraps look intimidating in the beginning. But like anything parenting-related (swaddling, clipping tiny nails, remembering which side you last fed on), it becomes second nature shockingly fast.

Most parents report they master babywearing after just a few goes. Some even tell us they can wrap a newborn faster than they can fold a fitted sheet!

We offer FREE one-on-one consult calls, tutorials, email support, and have a supportive community of parents over on our Chekoh Chatter FB Group. You don’t have to figure it out alone.

Debunked because:
Babywearing is a skill, not a puzzle - and skills get easier every time you do them.

Myth 6: “Babywearing Isn’t for Dads”

Tell that to the thousands of dads proudly rocking their carriers on the school run, at Bunnings, or during 4PM witching hour walks around the block.

A 2020 parenting behaviour study even found that dads who babywear felt more connected and more confident in caring for their infants.

Debunked because:
Babywearing is for any parent, any gender, any style.

What’s the Truth About Babywearing?

Babywearing is safe, secure, developmentally beneficial, and honestly… a sanity saver.

Keeping your baby close helps regulate their nervous system, supports bonding, and frees up your hands so you can eat, grocery shop, or just feel like a human again.

The real takeaway:
Babywearing myths stick around because they sound dramatic.
Babywearing facts stick around because they’re backed by decades of research, global cultural traditions, and thousands of happy parents (including the Chekoh community).
