Hip Health - what you need to know when wearing your Chekoh Baby Carrier

Hip Health - what you need to know when wearing your Chekoh Baby Carrier

Posted by Jessica Friend on

Let's talk Hip-Health safety with Chekoh Baby - all of our carriers are certified Hip Healthy as deemed by the IHDI

So let's talk Hip Health, why it's important and how you can promote healthy hip development for your Babe.

What is Hip Dysplasia?

Hip Dysplasia is a medical term for hip instability, shallowness of the hip socket or dislocation.

Depending on the severity and time of development, here are some more terms used and associated with Hip Dysplasia:

  • Developmental Dislocation of the Hip (DDH)
  • Actebular Dysplasia
  • Congenital Disclocation of the Hip (CDH)
  • Hip Dislocation

What can cause Hip Dysplasia?

Little is known about the cause of hip dysplasia and it is thought that Baby's position in the womb can increase pressure on their hips. Genetics may also play a role, although this is not the direct cause.

Hip health is especially important during the first six months of life and this is why hip healthy products should always be used.

Is it common?

According to the International Hip Dysplasia Institute, hip instability is the most common abnormality in newborns. Depending on the severity, some instances resolve naturally in the first few weeks of life, however others will need ongoing evaluation and treatment.

  • 1 in 10 infants will be born with hip instability
  • 1 in 100 will be treated for hip dysplasia

Is babywearing safe?

Babywearing has many benefits including bonding, cognitive and social development but did you know that it can be great for healthy hip development too?

Chekoh Carriers are designed to promote healthy hip development

"When proper hip position is maintained while babywearing, there may be substantial benefit for natural hip development" - IHDI

Here at Chekoh, we design all of our products and resources with your Baby's health in mind - this includes their hips!

The 'M' Position

Chekoh Baby Carriers help promote healthy hip development

When babywearing, we (and IHDI) encourage the 'M' position. Ensuring your little one has a deep squat and is in a natural clinging position by creating the 'M' shape with their legs. You may also know this as the Spread Squat or the Jockey Position.

To maintain this position throughout your wear, follow the simple checklist below:

  • Thighs spread
  • Hips bent
  • Knees slightly higher than their bottom
  • Supported thighs

Chest-to-Chest is Best!

Inward facing, chest-to-chest carries help promote hip health.

We often get asked if you can forward or outward face in our Carriers and the simple answer is no

There are many reasons for this but one is healthy hips, so let us break it down!

Evidence has shown that your Babe's hips are rapidly growing for the first six months and more slowly during the following six months. Even after your little one has gained head control, their hips are still in the developmental stages. With this in mind, the gentle forces created by torso grasping and clinging aid in healthy hip development - which would not be attained via a forward or outward facing carry.

Not only this but a chest-to-chest carry also places Baby's centre of gravity closer to you for a more comfortable and ergonomic carry, meaning less pain for you and a longer wear time for Baby - win win!
